From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

I haven’t read a book written with such emotion in a long time. As a teenager and young adult during the Vietnam War, I remember watching the news each night and the newscasters announcing each day’s death toll. This book brought back those memories. My husband was at the Naval academy in the early 70’s and has told me how people would heckle and spit on he and his other midshipmen when they were walking around Annapolis. This book is such a testament to all those who served, but mostly to “The Women” who saved so many lives. I went through a box of tissues.

A real eye-opener to the impact of war and the lives that are impacted for generations. As a daughter of a Vietnam veteran it gave insight into the Vietnam war and how it affected my father and our family. This book gave to me a greater sense of respect and appreciation for all who served - past and present.

Another good story by Kristin Hannah ! I’m old enough to remember the Vietnam war. I was 15 and attended Highschool in Frankfurt Germany, it was 1973 and the war was coming to an end. Most of the kids attending were military kids whose families were stationed there during the Vietnam war. Even though we were kids, I realize now, we never spoke about the war or asked specific questions. The story really touched me, the sacrifices these young men and women made for our country and to this day I don’t believe they were honored properly for their service. They deserved so much more.
  • Excellent book

Well written and interesting story of those not even those of us of the Vietnam era remember. And because my husband was a Seawolf in Vietnam, the only unit commissioned and decommissioned there, it was especially poignant. Not many know about those brave Navy helicopter fighters portrayed well here.
  • A story that needed to be told..

The music of that generation was sprinkled throughout the story. You hear those songs, you think of soldiers (men and women) in Vietnam.

Beautifully written, an important story, a terrible war that wasn’t a war, both heart breaking and heart warming.
