Description

From eldest daughter Shari Franke, the shocking true story behind the viral 8 Passengers family vlog and the hidden abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how, in the face of unimaginable pain, she found freedom and healing.

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime.

Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: “Finally.”

For the first time, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind 8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program, “ConneXions.” No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty.

I believed this book was very powerful. Not only is it real in the fact of it actually happening in the public eye, but it’s also relatable. Definitely won’t regret reading this!

The story and tails, horrific childhood of physical and emotional abuse by a mother, who puts on a façade of a happy family, in the form of YouTube channel. It also reveals how convoluted and corrupt the Mormon church is. With people in power, grooming, innocent young girl, and facing no consequence, whereas she was punished for being a victim. I highly recommend reading this book. Shari and her siblings are incredibly brave.

i have no words. i thought this memoir would be akin to “i’m glad my mom died” by jeanette mccurdy, but i was wrong. it is written in it’s own style, with emotion from both past and present playing a role. in this book, you see “hindsight is 20/20” being very significant, while also leaving you to feel empathy towards shari. maturity and lessons of self love are big elements in the book, and the author has a difficult relationship with both that you see grow and change through her life. i’m in love with this book.

This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking book. I finished it in a day and couldn’t believe what I was reading. I recommend listening along to the audiobook because it is narrated by the Author and really connects you to the emotions of the book. I hope that Shari and her family have peace for the rest of her life, she deserved none of that. I also hope that Kevin is able to heal from this because I do think in many ways he was a victim to both Ruby and the Connexions cult - although this is not to undermine that he had a responsibility to his children and did enable abuse. The Derek situation had my jaw on the floor and I felt so sad that Shari didn’t have her father to go to, and then Kevin also ignoring her on BYUs campus was a tough blow. I am sure that Kevin wishes he was there for her and his kids now, and it really does show how manipulative cult leaders can be: Kevin seems to have truly thought it was in his kids best interest to do those things. I think this entire situation is just so sick and twisted and I hope the family all find comfort in whatever they can. Lastly, I pray justice is served on Ruby and Jodi.

Such a tragic yet beautiful tale of resilience. I cannot imagine the strength and courage it took to write this. My heart goes out to Shari and all those who were hurt by Ruby and Jodi.
