Description

Two intertwined disappearances leave a rural community in shock in the latest gripping Charlie Parker novel from New York Times bestselling author John Connolly.

In a darkly brilliant thriller set in Maine’s rural Kennebec River Valley, the body of a young runaway from a “troubled teens” school has been found in the water, seemingly drowned, while a teenage girl has gone missing, believed dead. Now it is up to one man, private investigator Charlie Parker, to find the connection, and bring two evils—one new and one ancient—to an end…

Story - riveting, moves quickly, kept my interest. Characters - interesting, funny, well-developed. Obvious left-leaning opinions presented as character thoughts / ideas that did not move the story forward but felt disjointed with the rest of the book - could seriously do without! I have read every book Mr. Connolly has wrritten and enjoyed them all. I have consistently given 5-star ratings. But this time the added political views / opinions sprinkled throughout the story was intrusive and jarring, even though I often did not disagree with the comments made. The problem I have is they are not part of the overall narrative or character development, but thrown in to make a point which comes across as forced and untimely. One glaring example was when the main character was sitting in Moxie‘s office, waiting for a chance to speak with him. Moxie was engaged with a man named Carmichael, a character we have never been introduced to before, yet Mr. Connolly begins a discourse on immigration, immigrants (legal, and illegal), ICE arrests in the state, and the effect that these arrests had on the local community and businesses. This ends with the following statement: “It was all about creating a climate of fear, regardless of the damage to families, towns, and the local economy.” Sigh. I’m tired of books that contain superfluous, politically driven information…just tell the story.

It’s about time. A truly excellent book. Connolly’s development of Parker’s origins and his otherworldly past finally show some fruit. Great ending.
