This book is a lesson in don’t believe what you read and don’t assume that everything is a real clue. Not only are the characters not what they pretend to be, but the action is twisted and totally unexpected. David and Marcie Bowers seem to be an average upper middle class couple in an affluent neighborhood. Marcie is a lawyer and David owns a successful bar in Hemingway Grove. Those are facts you can count on. What is not evident is what they did before arriving in Hemingway Grove and how it affects their current lives and livelihood. Without giving anything away, I will say that David’s character fooled me the most and the revelations about him were nothing short of mind-blowing. The action moves quickly, with fast and short chapters that kept me engaged and wanting to keep reading. The characters are deceptive but so well rounded that they are believable and relatable. Even the secondary characters like Camille have an agenda and a secret. In fact, this book is filled with lies and guessing who is telling the truth is part of the fun of reading it. Riveting and completely entertaining, this is a book not to be missed and to be read a second time to see all the clues you missed the first time. James Patterson is a prolific writer and I have read most of his books. I can truthfully say that this is one of his best and definitely the most deviously plotted!
