Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A novel of self-discovery and second chances from the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning author—Willa Drake has had three opportunities to start her life over: in 1967, as a schoolgirl whose mother has suddenly disappeared; in 1977, when considering a marriage proposal; and in 1997, as a young widow trying to hold her family together.

So she is surprised when in 2017 she is given one last chance to change everything, after receiving a startling phone call from a stranger.

Without fully understanding why, she flies across the country to Baltimore to help a young woman she's never met. This impulsive decision, maybe the first one she’s consciously made in her life, will lead Willa into uncharted territory—surrounded by eccentric neighbors who treat each other like family, she finds solace and fulfillment in unexpected places.

A bewitching novel of hope and transformation, Clock Dance gives us Anne Tyler at the height of her powers.

  • Not my favorite Anne Tyler

The book started out fine but the third act became too predictable. I also found the characters were either undeveloped or one dimensional. I raced to finish it.
  • Waste of time

This book started out ok- the first 2 chapters- but went nowhere and was a complete waste of time. Stupid content and shallow character development. Horrible.

Anne Tyler gets it; why people float through life without examining what they really want. She has a lovely way of letting us admire her characters and what makes them human. Clock Dance was one of those novels that make you root for an unfocused protagonist. I only wish Ms. Tyler had made Willa choose her path instead of making us imagine.

I enjoyed the writing, but the book ended before anything ever happened. I’m ok with a few loose ends this book didn’t wrap up a single relationship.

I have read quite a number of Tyler’s books. This was “pleasant”. Nothing more or less. Very predictable, although she is proficient in catching the essence of her characters very quickly.

I hate it when reviewers say “I couldn’t put it down “ so I am not going to say that, but I will say I looked forward to having a reason to sit down and pick this book up again. I am surprised at the readers who disliked Clock Dance. Anne Tyler always has a good story to tell and this one will be one of my favorites. Wonderful characters and setting. And the ending was just right. If you are an Anne Tyler fan you will like this story. I enjoyed it from the first page to the last. I feel like I have left all those interesting people and want to know how their lives turn out. Great read👏

There may be many characters in this book, but each plays a very important part in the plot. Thank you for another great read Ms. Tyler.
  • Thin development and cheap ending.

While the character developed slowly and with interest, it still left her feeling dry and shallow. There was a marked absence of richness of character. The title is a stretch to what the author was trying to relate it to. And the ending was cheap and abrupt.

While the author clearly has talent and the book started out strong it went south in the middle and the end. I found it boring.
