“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

  • Excellent

I didn't realize this had a romantic element to it until I was too engrossed to put it down - which really says something, and though this has been a little too horny a ride for my personal taste you can see I've chosen to put the review on book TWO. Waiting patiently for more.
  • Love the story BUT…..

Violet is annoying as a character at times!!!! Ughhhh
  • Some good nuggets FOR SURE

I really enjoyed this book, it had some great twists and exposed secrets which is great. A few good scenes of spice which we love. My only gripe with the book is it just lost me a bit in the middle, I’d say about 80% in it starts to pick up again with some exciting parts and a great ending. Overall all 4.5/5, fourth wing being 5/5!
  • Not as good as Fourth Wing

    By moodyreader
I really loved fourth wing and iron flame was almost as good! I really enjoy Rebecca’s writing style, it’s so easy to get lost in the pages.
  • My escape from reality!

I LOVE THIS BOOK ! Just as much as the first one! So much so I am about to read it again. If dragons were real, I would want to be a rider! I just love this series!
  • Great with troubles which i got through. .

Great action. Great story movements. Dulling detail not necessary. The sex scenes a bit, dare I say, long and boring. I love their passion yet it got tiresome. Still five stars. Hate the ending and cliff hanger.
  • So Good!

I probably enjoyed this more than Fourth Wing. It does have some slow moving parts…but then it gets really good toward the end! Such a powerful ending/cliffhanger!!
  • Haven’t felt this into a book since harry potter

    By samiller26
I’ve read a lot of books but haven’t been this invested in a character and excited where the story is going since the Deathly Hallows came out when I was 14. Such amazing characters and I don’t know where it’s going but NEED to. Finished this book, cried a bit and starting fourth wing over again because I don’t want to leave this world yet while waiting for book 3.
  • Loved it!

Fell asleep multiple nights reading this book because I could not bring myself to find a stopping place for bedtime. Anxiously awaiting Book 3.
  • Best book I have read in a while
